conniecrosby I've always felt that RSS was a background revolution, not one for actual users.
#etigcamp "be ethical" has a new meaning to me suddenly: don't be a jerk, make sure your cool new tools are accessible.
#etigcamp @
adr: "Take the Fun Rules, Minus the Anti-Rules. Does it still sound like a good idea? THEN DO IT. DO IT NOW!! DO IT!!!" :-)
in esteemed company, listening to @
adr at #etigcamp

hmmm, momentile uploads don't work if there's a hashtag in the subject line!
#etigcamp @
adr is now giving us his management rules. "As a manager you can't know everything. Don't pretend you do."
#etigcamp I hate disappearing managers, it's lonely!
#etigcamp @
adr: management rule: "Say yes!". Think: is the project going to be evil? dangerous? a collosal waste of time? If not, say Yes!

adr: Management rule: Don't create obstacles that don't need to be there.
#etigcamp @
adr: amount of energy that is put into Second Life is beyond him. BUT he may be wrong, it is not his job to tell people not to.
#etigcamp @
adr hates Second Life! Sad. I think that's about hating the way Second Life has been used to date.
#etigcamp @
adr: Experimentation is important. You can't predict the future. If someone has a hare-brained idea, let them run with it.
#etigcamp @
adr: All this stuff is exponentially easier if you have peers who are accepting of new ideas, enthusiastic.
#etigcamp audience question: should the library become like an incubator? @
adr: "people need the freedom to mess about"
#etigcamp @
adr: if he wasn't given the freedom to try things out, he wouldn't be a librarian today. He would have been bored & left.
#etigcamp what about giving staff 20% of time to experiment?
#etigcamp "I'm not into Second Life" to me sounds like "You want Sci Fi? I'm not into that." It seems irrelevant, counter-productive to me.
#etigcamp @
adr: if you are waiting for 100% buy-in for projects, you probably won't get it done.
@
conniecrosby Good idea! Probably the best professional development opportunity ever.
@
rmazar glad you made it! Please come say hello when we break. :-) #etigcamp
#etigcamp @
adr: firefox jetpack - easier to write firefox extensions, like HTML.
#etigcamp @
adr: he would like these rules/ideas to be applicable to more than just librarians, more than just libraries. (I agree!)
#etigcamp Question from the audience: is this a form of activism? @
adr: possibly came out of activist viewpoint. Spreading information.

#etigcamp Make one friend in the IT dept. If they say you don't suck, the rest of the dept. will think you don't suck & you will get help
#etigcamp @
adr American academic IT dept. structure more loose & open than in Canada.
#etigcamp IT depts. are too worried about being "hacked into". @
adr they have to stop watching mid-90s computer movies.
#etigcamp when do libraries get to progress from small projects to big projects? @
adr when we build trust, that we won't f*ck things up.
#etigcamp @
adr: just because you can't code doesn't mean you can't participate. We need a range of skill sets, e.g. usability.
#etigcamp @
adr: make the tent as big as possible
#etigcamp Really wanted to jump in there about code and librarians...might have to turn that into a blog post.
#etigcamp Next up: Jason Hammond, Organizational Development Specialist, Regina Public Library - Blogging Librarian vs. Blogging Library.

@

headtale: rural libraries - email, website & using cell phones a lot. Dynix Classic as the ILS. No wireless in the libraries.

headtale: he was given a lot of opportunities in his public library job to try out technologies. He also helped general public.
Jason just got the audience to yell "Let's get ready to rummmmmmmmmmble" #etigcamp

headtale: sometimes in libraries even blogs & rss are still seen as new and emerging.
