We're setting up base in the former translators' lounge. Old school fun. Still preparing some stuff, but we'll get started soon. Official session start is 4:15pm.
We'll be liveblogging in four slots over the next two hours or so: Jen Pahlka's and Brady Forrest's Opening Welcome, O'Reilly Radar with Tim O'Reilly, A Conversation with Yossi Vardi (with both Tim O'Reilly and Yossi Vardi), and Startup Ignite. Ignite will be the largest panel by far with Brady Forrest, Lukasz Gadowski, Mike Butcher and Christophe Maire.
Light and sound check are finished. Now speakers are getting ready. Countdown: 15 minutes.

the room is already half fool ... or is it half empty?
The room's filling up quickly, but there's still quite a few seats left.

Wireless is slowing down significantly - all the keynote bloggers clogging the tubes? ;)
this feels much more like a family meeting compared to last year
here we go, keynote starts. dear wireless, please work! ;)
lighst are down
haha, they are doing a pseudo light show
that is one of the cheesiest things i have ever seen at a conference
The room's packed by now. Light show. Somewhat esoteric.
wow, they right from the start make reference to the shitty experience of last year
"Thanks for coming back after last year", Jen Pahlka just said. Irony still works quite well. And yes, it's a lot better organized this time. Props!
tim o'reilly is on stage
his talk is called "web meets world"
deep trends behind web 2.0:
- the internet as a platform
do you really think that we are done with these?
A lot of updates will be posted simultaneously; this is because the wireless seems to have broken down.
"i have predicted for a long time that we will enter a time of consolidation"
Winners: Cloud computing; SAAS appls like Google Apps, Open Source software. Also, entrepreneurs who believe in their stuff and stick to it.
Losers: Me-too startups (i.e. copycats), and the VCs that supported them.
I (not Tim) say: not too bad, losing those copycats.
did tim just say bubble? ;-)
Tim switches to the impact of tech on ecological issues. that's something he also stressed in our interview earlier today. (We'll post it later.)
"not an investment bubble - a reality bubble!"
wireless is back, hopefully it's here to stay.
"Singularity is coming closer."
Tim: Robust Strategy #1: Work on stuff that matters!
"Scenarios for Oil Drilling" 1980-90
Dramatic slides. If we don'T act and there's climat change: "Bilions die, large wars, horible famine and drought, economic collapse..."
He means: Really solve problems, don't solve wanna-be problems that fit your marketing.
