  • Video has exploded online into dozens of new forms, and through new providers, such as blip.tv, Hulu, Ustream and Joost, aimed at delivering video content to new markets in new ways. What have we learned so far about the future shape of online video? Why are services such as Hulu and streaming TV from U.S. networks not available in Canada? Join blip.tv founder Dina Kaplan, CTV online video guru Andre Gaulin and CBC video producer Guinevere Ortis as they discuss these and other issues in a panel moderated by Amber MacArthur.

  • Andre: Senior Director of Technology for CTV Digital Media Group. Bringing "crazy" new media stuff to a broadcaster. New video platform
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:36:11 PM
  • Guinevere: Mobile strategy production foe CBC, behind-the-scenes videos, added value stuff. Put all that online. Publish own shows online. 1st broadcaster to do a legal bittorrent of a TV show.

  • Dina: blip.tv focused on original shows on the Web. Content creator should focus on producing great content, then blip.tv distributes it. Monetizes the content via sponsors, split the revenue 50/50 with the content creators.

  • What new things are you guys doing?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:39:30 PM
  • Dina: Creators can opt into"run of site" network to maximize potential revenue. Focussing on creating as much money as possible for content creators. You can make $ on the sponsorship side and finding matches between content creators and sponsors. Creators should focus on a niche to find those sponsors. Playing agent role to put callouts in show, etc.

  • About Blip
A new class of entertainment is emerging that is being made by the people without the support of billion-dollar multinationals. Our mission is to support these people by taking care of all the problems a budding videoblogger, podcaster or Internet TV producer tends to run into. We'll take care of the servers, the software, the workflow, the advertising and the distribution. We leave you free to focus on creativity.

  • Andre: Biggest thing = trying to increase the size of our library of available content. Licensing rights of US content. e.g. Comedy Network licenses South Park, Daily Show. ABC shows like "Grey's Anatomy", "Lost", "Desperate Housewives". Worked with Disney in US to deliver those shows for free to end-users using regular ad model. 10M videos a month on TSN.
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:43:22 PM
  • Why can't we view all US shows online?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:45:35 PM
  • Andre: Rights are very complicated. Licensing requirements different for each studio via. complicated agreement. Have to support different streaming technologies to satisfy licenses e.g. FMS3, Silverlight, Windows DRM. Ownership and who-gets-paid stalls things.

  • TV ppl fear of driving more ppl to the Web?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:47:17 PM
  • Andre: Big part of my team's job is to educate them.
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:47:29 PM
  • Guin: "Primary thing we ran into was licensing" (like Andre). Everyone/rights-holders need to buy into how they are distributing their shows. Surprisingly simple. Listening to feedback important. Bittorrrent is a solution to bandwidth costs of online distribution (costs almost nothing).

  • Is this a model for the future?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:50:37 PM
  • Guin: This was an experiment. Our audience is already watching video online. 40% of audience of The Hour is online. We are trying to reach our audience, to reconnect with them.
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:51:07 PM
  • Andre: Our job within big mediais to put our hand up and show ppl new things, ask them if they've considered this or that.

  • How plan to monetize content if it doesn't show the Blip.tv brand?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:52:32 PM
  • Dina: Made decision early on not to impeed content creator's brand. Let shows build their own brand. Catered service to top content creators. "we are literally at your service". Worked from that feedback. We can monetize your content for you. Wherever videos are watched, we can still monetize those views (via distributing ads).

  • Is Vimeo on your radar in a major way?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:54:44 PM
  • Dina: They do a great job. 3 categories of video sites: 1) viral video (YouTube), 2) friends and family sharing (Vimeo), 3) original TV shows for the web (blip.tv) - blip more similar to TV then friends/family
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:55:59 PM
  • Andre: CTV wanted to branch out into more original TV shows (for the web) at a fraction of the price. Not making up for loses in TV industry, but want to do these unique things.
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:56:53 PM
  • Future of video on the web?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:57:32 PM
  • Andre: Watching those users. Deliver things our users are ready for when they are ready. Moving internet off of PC onto mobile devices - may be something there.
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:58:07 PM
  • Guin: Divergence of business models. Old way to monetize TV isn't there online. We will never converge into a single model. We will have many different business models.
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 5:58:58 PM
  • Dina: Video online over next years will parallel what's going on in music industry. Show creator will build up big audience online, and then they will go to the network. More power to content creators.

  • Taking questions from audience...
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 6:00:25 PM
  • Question: What are you doing to get yourself out there (in FB, Twitter)?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 6:00:52 PM
  • Andre: Different brands work in different places. Trying to do right type of viral marketing. We'll never build our own social network. We go to where they are (seed msg boards, forums).

  • Question: Videoblog publisher: Why do I want a distributor like blip.tv when I want ppl to come back to my site? Drinksville
by MDM at 5/21/2008 6:02:50 PM
  • Dina: You could host it yourself. Come to blip.tv so you don't want to deal with all that technical stuff. You have the option to turn off whatever distribution you want. It can just live on your site and drive all the traffic there.
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 6:04:05 PM
  • Question: Broadband costs going up, there is no business model for online. How are you addressing this?
by Jonathan Keebler (Live) at 5/21/2008 6:04:45 PM
  • Andre: Cost/gig is going down as traffic goes up (guaranteed minimums). Successful dealing with agencies to monetize content. There's room with storage partners to get costs down. Cost prohibitive more true when doing live streaming (e.g. TSN live streams of games). Always on the look to see what the options are, but still using CDN today.

  • Question: (Asker did a documentary for CBC) Wanted to do a DVD release but CBC wanted a parallel rollout of media on all formats. Lets all Hate Toronto
by MDM at 5/21/2008 6:07:35 PM
  • Guin: Broadcasters have to count where everybody is watching the show. We have to put the shows out there ourselves. We have to make those numbers count.
