What web designers need most is empathy.

Showing websites that have internal battles. The battle to make a good website and the battle to make money. Sometimes the good content gets buried due to trying to make money.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 12:39:41 PM
It doesn't matter how good the content is, if it doesn't look good and isn't easy to use the good content won't be found.

Make a link look like a link. It doesn't have to be blue and underlined but there should be a consistent link style.

Description: We’ll have better web design when we stop asking it to be something it’s not, and start appreciating it for what it is. It’s not print, not video, not a poster—and that’s not a problem. Learn how to explain to clients and bosses what it is you do, and why they should stand back and let you do it.

Web designers have to be motivated to keep learning. Good education is hard to find.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 12:44:16 PM
College can teach you CSS and HTML but they don't teach you everything you need to know. They don't teach content and layout etc...

They made a web design survey, we all took it, we know.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 12:50:26 PM
From the survey they saw that the more money you make the less your field of study in college mattered.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 12:51:31 PM
People making lots of money didn't study web design in college.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 12:52:08 PM
BUT older people make more money and they didn't have those programs back then.

Web designers get no respect. Architect, attorney or surgeon get lots of respect. No one gets web design, they don't understand what's involved.

They think we sit in our mother's garage in our underwear using Front Page.

There are no standard titles on the web, it's not like saying you're an attorney.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 12:59:58 PM
Very different titles based on where you work. One will call you Web Master, one will call you a Front-End Developer.

Who owns the website?
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:02:28 PM
You don't usually own the sites you work on. You're not accountable, morally etc..
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:03:25 PM
Companies always base the website on the org chart.

Creative people are at work but they're being beaten down. Rejected by clients, lawyers...|
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:09:02 PM
Web designers don't get paid well, unless they're at the top. Lots making $20,000 and very few making $80,000.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:10:12 PM
If web design is a new job are there new rules? No, they're treated the same as everyone else.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:12:01 PM
Gender bias (women make less). Women who believe there is a gender bias make more than women who believe there isn't.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:12:18 PM
There aren't really any good awards that take into account usability, empathetic design etc...
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:16:37 PM
The type of web design that is awarded by graphic design magazines is not an example of good web design.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:20:35 PM
The webby awards. Websites with videos on them. Nothing really to do with web design.|
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:20:47 PM
The news media. They only report on sites that make money.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:23:55 PM
"Why isn't there any landmark web design?" Like, the Led Zeppelin of websites.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:25:28 PM
A website that's like water. Clear, transparent.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:27:50 PM
Great web design, simple, out of the way, easy to use.
by Matt McCausland at 6/23/2008 1:29:36 PM
The "guitar solo" approach to web design. How much "zazz" should you put in your design
