The Daily Dig - January 12, 2016

  • Egypt are going to the Olympics for the fifth time in their history, after defeating Tunisia 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14) in the final of the African Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament in Brazzaville. And what a way to do it!

Egypt were twice equalised by Tunisia and had to come back from 11-12 down in the fifth, before bringing it home on their second match point.

Tunisia join Algeria in continuing to the Intercontinental OQT next May, where they meet Mexico and Chile for one last berth at Rio 2016.

Egypt previously took part in the Los Angeles 1984, Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008 Olympics. They also qualified to the 1976 Olympics, but fell victims of the African boycott and withdrew after arriving at the Montreal Games.

Final ranking at the African OQT:

    1. Egypt
    2. Tunisia
    3. Algeria
    4. Cameroon
    5. Congo
    6. DR Congo
    7. Nigeria
