CRICKET DESK: The test is pretty evenly poised after the first day with SA on 267-7 although, I have a sneaky feeling that England may be the happier of the two teams after day one. Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris have added 42 runs for the eighth wicket and SA will want to score at least 300 to feel like they have a competitive total.
WEATHER UPDATE: There was some early morning rain in Johannesburg today but the good news is that the rain has cleared up. Should be a bit of moisture about today which might help the seam bowlers.
CRICKET DESK: We are 30 minutes from the start of play. You do get the feeling that 300 is an important score for both teams. If England bowl SA out for less than 300 they will feel that they have the upper hand but if SA score 300 or more they will feel that they have achieved a decent total.
PITCH REPORT: There is still a tinge of green on the pitch and there are a few divots on the wicket which will result in variable bounce as the match moves on. There should still be some seam movement and the bowlers will want to bowl a fuller length.
FIRST OVER OF THE DAY: This is an importan day in the context of the whole series. SA will not want to get bundled out quickly this morning. Kagiso Rabada will face the first ball of the day to be bowled by Jimmy Anderson. The ball is less than 10 overs old and will still be hard and should seam and swing. Rabada pulls a short ball to square leg for a single and SA are underway.
50-RUN STAND: Broad is on to bowl and Rabada punches a delivery back past the bowler for two runs. That was a decent looking shot from the number 9. Braod then bowls a bouncer that clears Rabada and keeper Bairstow before running off to the boundary for four byes. SA 274-7. The 50-run stand comes up, off 99 balls, as Broad sends down a leg-side delivery that runs away for four more byes.
WICKET: Broad has the breakthrough for England as he pitches a delivery up that nips slightly off the seam. Morris is dragged into a shot only to feather an outside edge through to keeper Bairstow. SA 281-8. That is Bairstow's fifth catch of the innings. He has also pulled off a run out.
WICKET: Anderson has his first wicket of the innings as he serves up a delivery that swings away from Rabada before collecting the outside edge with Bairstow taking his sixth catch of the innings to equal the record for most cathes in an innings at the Wanderers. SA 281-9.
BOUNDARY: Viljoen has his first test runs as he punches a full delivery from Anderson back down the ground for four. SA 288-9.
SCORE UPDATE: SA have managed to survive the first 30 minutes of the day. SA 291-9.
SHOT: Morkel goes on the attack as he drives a full Broad delivery straight back past the bowler for four.
DOUBLE FIGURES: Morkel squeezes an Anderson delivery towards the cover point boundary for two runs. Morkel moves to 11 and Hardus Viljoen is the only batsman not to reach double figures so far.
300 UP: Viljoen moves to 11 as he pulls a short ball from Broad through midwicket for four. That was a very good shot and SA are now 303-9. Viljoen then flicks a leg-side delivery down to fine leg for four more. All SA's batsmen have reached double figures in this innings. Viljoen has four more as he top edges a short ball way over the keeper's head. SA scored 14 runs off the over and are now 313-9.
DROPPED: Morkel drives at an Anderson delivery to send a thick outside edge towards the slip cordon. Bairstow dives to his left but cannot hang onto the chance. Probably should have caught that.
OUT OF THE ATTACK: James Anderson has been hauled out of the attack after the umpire decides that Anderson has been running on the pitch. Anderson will not be allowed to bowl again in the innings.
WICKET: Stokes bowls one ball and picks up a wicket as Morkel edges a delivery through to Cook at first slip. That is Stokes' 50th test wicket.
CRICKET DESK: South Africa will be very happy with their final score as they were eventually bowled out for 313. Chris Morris (28), Kagiso Rabada (24), Morne Morkel (12) and Hardus Viljoen (20 not out) all played their part in taking SA past 300. Ben Stokes ended with 3-53.
ENGLAND INNINGS: Chris Morris will open the bowling, an interesting choice, and Cook is off the mark immediately with two runs on the leg side. England 5-0 after the first over.
@Khathu: I think that may be a hit harsh. It's a tough wicket to bat on. The average score at the ground is just over the 300 mark.
NEW-BALL PARTNERS: Somewhat surprisingly Morne Morkel will not bowl with the new ball. Kagiso Rabada on for a bowl. Three runs off the Rabada over.
WICKET: Rabada! Rabada pitches a delivery up with the ball swinging away from Hales, who goes on the drive, with AB de De Villiers taking a good catch at second slip. England 10-1.
