Hey guys! I'm here at Reggie's giving you the play by play of their quasi-weekly open mic night held on Wednesdays nights. So far it's slow, but hey, could pick up. Lets go!!
The bar recently just opened up after extensive renovations pretty late in the year. They opened up again on November 25, 2015. They missed so many opportunities to take students alcohol money...
I got here around 9:15 and nothing was going on in the area of music so I asked the bar tender whats going on. "Once musicians actually get here," he said while cleaning plates. And should I add, not without a hint of sass under that reply.
There's around 70 people here right now, the place is pretty full. It could be more full though. There's a slow trickle of people coming in. It doesn't seem like any of them miss the music.
I want to get a PBR but something just makes me feel weird about becoming the girl sitting alone in a bar with her laptop and a beer. I mean, I'm fine with it, but... actually no, I'm going to get a beer.
A guys getting up on stage! We're starting! #reggies #openmic #wackywednesdays
First performance of the night comes in the form of a guitar rendition of Hey Jude by The Beatles. I can appreciate it.
It was a 6/10 performance. Not bad, but not spectacular either.
Looks like he was only doing one song, and now we're back to waiting for the next act. Back to my PBR.
This is Reggie's second official open night of the year. Their first open mic night was March 2, 2016. From what I heard from friends who attended, it was just a lot of sexist stand-up acts.
Their open mic operates on a walk-in basis, no pre application required. I think this is the best process, because I personally would be more down to preform after around four beers.
"Ladies and gentleman, we are only running an hour and a half late! Open mic comes from the heart, open mic shows you emotion, open mic is where it's at!" said the unnamed host
The producer of The Beatles died today, according to the host! I think these two musicians coming up are playing Beatles music, just a wild guess.
"I have two musicians coming up, and then after that, COMEDY!" That last point was met with a groan.
These guys are playing Help! One of the six Beatles songs I actually know.
They're harmonizing too. They're good! It's a little loud, but hey. If you sound good, volume is less important.
Their third song doesn't sound as good. It sort of reminds me of a boy band messing around with instruments in their parents garage after they smoked a lot of weed.
"We have comedians up the ying yang tonight," said the host. Jeffery's first! AND HE'S SO LOUD, HE DOES NOT NEED A MIC OH GOD
FUCK HE'S SO LOUD! He's a voice actor, so that makes sense.
His first joke involved a clown getting paged for a birthday party so he had to leave the girl he was sleeping with. This is going to be fun (jk)
Now he's comparing the way that girls get ready to go to a dance club vs. guys get ready, and what would happen if the rolls were reversed.
Jeffery is very good at beat boxing though. He's creating a dance club environment, for real! Some people are bopping a long, and it was met with some real loud applause!
Miriam is next! "Guy's question, did you do anything for the Syrian refugees?" she said. Please don't go there.
"I feel bad for the refugees. Do you guys at least feel bad?"
Out of all the things in this world, you should not have to pull from the refugee crisis to make up your jokes.
Miriam is 31, woah. "In your 30's when you date, you give a chance to people you never thought you would give a chance to!"
"I'm already on a dating site, it's called LinkedIn." Good one Miriam!
I went to this open mic at The Hive cafe on the Loyola campus at Concordia and it was really nice. It included a lot of music, some spoken word, an accordion, singing. I wish tonight was more like that one.
There should be more music!!!! Comedians are such an acquired taste.
The hosts name is Jerry. Just for your information.
Emery is our last comedian of the night!! He seems a little nervous.
"I'm going to try to be funny. I hope you guys don't mind. Oh lord."
Miriam was just annoying, I'm glad she's off.
"Uh-oh spaghetti-oh is just "oh shit" in Italian."
"Does anyone want me to sing a song?" People are raising their hands!
He's going to sing!!!!! I feel like he didn't prep any content.
"This is the best joke, this is the funniest one." He's just counting, up to now 30.
What is going on? Why are people clapping in response to him counting??
Now Jerry has taken over the stage and is yelling about how he dropped out of college.
There's another musician act! Doug, I'm so excited to hear what you got to share.
Jerry lied!!!!!! Doug is a comedian!!!! "I head Concordia has some really hot women, I see that none of them showed up tonight." Fuck off, Doug.
Other people have responded with fuck off too. "It's rooms like this that make me hope that Isis wins."
Fuck off, Doug. Only two people clapped for Doug.
Jerry said Chris is going to sing a song next, but I no longer trust Jerry. We'll see.
Jerry's comments suck too. "I love the Chinese! If you don't, get out of this bar." Where is Chris? Did Jerry lie again?
He's just trying to kill time now by rambling with a mic. "Chris, come sing us a song, dude." Yes Chris, please relieve Jerry of this strain.
Chris is on stage I think! Pretty sure he works at Reggie's, he has a Reggies shirt on. Also a random woman has joined him on stage and is now just dancing.
He's singing Tutti Fruity!!!!!!! I like it!!!!
The blonde woman onstage with him is definitely drunk too. It's such an interesting sight, Chris is a bald black guy screaming out Tutti Fruity while reading off an iPad, while a very drunk blonde woman is smiling and rocking next to him.
What are you doing blonde woman? Where are your parents?
Jerry is now closing up the night and I am so relieved!
The bar is open for a few more hours, but it is here where I call it a night.
Thank you to everyone who followed along with me on this amazing journey of bad jokes, awkward situations, and a can of PBR.
