  • The spot: "Strong on the Economy"
    The plot: It zeroes in on the topic of the week - the economy - with the same pounding drum beats and newsreel-style images as the last NDP ad, claiming Stephen Harper offers "tiny tax cuts" for ordinary citizens and billions for corporations.

  • "The difference between here and the United States," he says, "is that in Canada you can't just attack the other guys because there are too many other guys. You also have to make the case for yourself. It's true that those type of ads aren't necessarily as effective as straight negative ads, but they have more legs, so you can run them more often and try to accomplish both (negative and positive) goals."
    The "Layton for PM" theme is a throwback to the years of former NDP leader Ed Broadbent and a sign, says Mr. Fletcher, that the party has polling that shows improvements in Mr. Layton's voter appeal.
