  • amazing camera work this evening, especially the closeup on NE's band. Just love watching parent and fledgling together in the nest at dusk! thank you
by hopkefamily at 6/15/2010 2:07:30 AM
  • Whoa! What happened to the camera? It appears in black and white only - is it just me?
by bets at 6/15/2010 2:08:08 AM
  • @bets It has been a wonderful Eagle Day. NE has been safely returned to NBG and all is well in the garden of eagles. The camera has been turned off for the evening. Have a wonderful night..

  • Did the rehabber feed him last night? Thank you everyone for saving this little guy's life.
by intrigued at 6/15/2010 2:44:07 PM
  • @intrigued - I understand that NE was fed some spot (fish) and ate quite well. The ordeal didn't seem to afffect his appetite.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 2:44:13 PM
  • Are these the original trio?
by nancy at 6/15/2010 2:46:59 PM
  • did parents make a food drop?
by chrisinca at 6/15/2010 2:47:01 PM
  • @chrisinca @nancy - The camera was not on the nest when the fledglings returned to the nest. But it looked like something was delivered - and I believe ND managed to claim it. For a while Camellia was on the branch to the left (behind the other branch) and then hopped down to the right side of the nest - to eventually manage to take it away. NE came back to perch on the branch that Camellia had been on - and I believe went back up there and is perching there now.

  • NE looks wonderful this morning. You would never know that he had been in trouble. Hope he is smarter now.
by Lee in Ok. at 6/15/2010 2:47:51 PM
  • Good Morning Congo, has anyone seen the stray eaglet that was there when NE took his spill??
by sicillianbiker at 6/15/2010 2:48:28 PM
  • @sicillianbiker - I don't think the 'visitor' has been seen. But I am not really sure.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 2:48:33 PM
  • This seems to be a favored perch. Is it part of the camera tree?
by MaryO at 6/15/2010 2:49:12 PM
  • @MaryO - Your comment came in earlier - and at that time, he was perched on the camera tree.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 2:49:17 PM
  • are there any photos or videos of the eagles fishing in the lake? Would be interesting.
by Spotty at 6/15/2010 2:51:16 PM
  • @Spotty - Unfortunately, no one has been able to follow them and get a photo or video of them hunting/fishing. That would be a wonderful thing to see.

  • last year when a juvenile eagle came into the nest area it was chased out. were the parents not around when this one paid a visit?
by sandy at 6/15/2010 2:55:01 PM
  • @sandy - The situation was a bit different last year. The eaglets were younger and still in the nest - not even branching. It happened May 2rd. The adults were near the nest when the visitor arrived, but I guess they were not feeling there was any threat. If you look at the photos last year, you will see the situation was a bit different (look at the entire sequence): www.eagle-paparazzi.com

  • Has anyone seen the fledlings get(steal)food on their own yet or are they relying on mom and dad?
by me at 6/15/2010 2:56:18 PM
  • @me - I think they have only stolen from each other at this point. No one that I know of has seen them get food elsewhere on their own.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 2:56:23 PM
  • Is it common for another juvenile to visit a neighboring nest for dinner? Is there a picture of him?
by Marie at 6/15/2010 2:58:29 PM
  • @Marie - It does happen that other fledglings will visit other nests looking for food. I'm not sure you could say it is common though. You should ask CCB that question or DGIF when they are in the blog next time. There is a photo of the visitor on this page. Scroll down when it opens: norfolkeagles.com

  • Have been gone What happened to Ne there seems to be a lot comment on him but I don't hear what took place. Please reply thank you
by jeank at 6/15/2010 2:59:36 PM
  • @jeank - Please visit the links above (DGIF and CCB's blogs) - the entire story of NE's adventure is written there - with photos also.

  • It appears that a fowl of some sort was consumed in the nest yesterday evening. Anyone get and ID on what it was ?
by Raptorman at 6/15/2010 3:01:00 PM
  • @Raptorman - I have not heard if anyone determined what that bird was - I believe you area asking about the one later in the day - dark grey with almost black tail feathers?
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:01:06 PM
  • What a beautiful tour of the treetops and landscape. Really puts things in perspective. A big thanks to the camera operator this morning!
by lola at 6/15/2010 3:09:06 PM
  • Someone had mentioned yesterday that they were a little surprised the parents didn't defend eaglet yesterday I'm wondering if its a case as they are now older that the parents are not as protective, even though they continue to feed them, maybe its natures way of having them start defending themselves?
by Frank at 6/15/2010 3:10:41 PM
  • Some days back someone noted that just prior to flight, the fledglings bobbed their heads side to side. I just noticed NE doing that. Is this a common trate with all of them, adults included?
by NBG fan at 6/15/2010 3:12:49 PM
  • @NBG fan - I have noticed that also. I think they are just getting prepared to make that leap. I have a parrot who projects when he is going to try to launch also - and moves his feet back and forth too.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:13:03 PM
  • Good morning all and grateful for the happy ending. NE got the royal suite and menu. lol I was wondering if they weighed him and got any updated stats on him?
by Terri at 6/15/2010 3:20:49 PM
  • @Terri - Good question. I will try to find out the answer to that question.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:20:58 PM
  • NE seems to be taking it easy, rest a lot, maybe getting strength, confidence back. Yesterday when cam sat on the branch next to him was awesome picture. Like Cam was welcoming him back and telling him he would be ok. I love this site and thank you to everybody for making it so interesting as well as a learning experience.
by Annie at 6/15/2010 3:23:12 PM
  • What effect would the water have had on the transmitter if it had been Camellia who ended up in the canal?
by Mary Ann in BC at 6/15/2010 3:31:09 PM
  • @Mary Ann in BC - That is a good question. I know the rain doesn't affect it - it has to be waterproof - but I'm not sure what would happen if it was submerged. Although, it is fitted on the back, so wouldn't of been submerged too much. Please ask that question again when Mr. Lukei is in the blog. I will forward your question to him too, in case he isn't on soon.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:31:13 PM
  • What time did they release NE yesterday? Thanks.
by rth at 6/15/2010 3:45:06 PM
  • @rth - Source CCB: At 1:00pm today (6/14/10) NE was returned by Lisa Barlow to Norfolk Botanical Garden and released back into the wild. He was placed on a six-foot high T-bar perch to get him off the ground and after a few seconds of looking around and orienting himself he launched into the air and flew directly toward his nest which was about 500 yards away. He flew past the nest tree and landed in a gum tree close to the picnic area. About 3:00 NE flew to the 2008 camera tree and then at 3:30 flew to the nest tree and sat on the front branch (love branch) next to Camellia (NC). Back home and all is well.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:45:30 PM
  • I was wondering why Reese released HE from an elevated post - shouldn't a healthy eagle take off from the ground, and why didn't they make him take off from the ground, just to make sure he was alright?
    by J at 6/15/2010 3:49:46 PM
  • @J - NE was checked over completely by a local vet and they found him in good health. I'm sure the perch was just to get him a bit of lift, as it is more difficult for the young eagles to take off from the ground at this time - they are still building those muscles.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:50:03 PM
  • If cam can wear the transmitter in the rain, it must be fairly water tight.
by Pink Floyd at 6/15/2010 3:50:40 PM
  • @Pink Floyd - Yes, I'm sure it is. I'm sure CCB can elaborate.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:50:43 PM
  • Just checking in ... is that NE resting in nest? Or do we know?
by jean at 6/15/2010 4:01:01 PM
  • @jean - I think it is NE in the nest right now. Earlier he was on the back branch. I wasn't watching when he went into the nest - so I'm just assuming it is NE. I could be wrong.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 4:01:10 PM
  • Ah, so it's ND. :)
by Shari at 6/15/2010 4:21:43 PM
  • @Shari - looks that way.
