@bets It has been a wonderful Eagle Day. NE has been safely returned to NBG and all is well in the garden of eagles. The camera has been turned off for the evening. Have a wonderful night..

@intrigued - I understand that NE was fed some spot (fish) and ate quite well. The ordeal didn't seem to afffect his appetite.

@chrisinca @nancy - The camera was not on the nest when the fledglings returned to the nest. But it looked like something was delivered - and I believe ND managed to claim it. For a while Camellia was on the branch to the left (behind the other branch) and then hopped down to the right side of the nest - to eventually manage to take it away. NE came back to perch on the branch that Camellia had been on - and I believe went back up there and is perching there now.

@sicillianbiker - I don't think the 'visitor' has been seen. But I am not really sure.

@MaryO - Your comment came in earlier - and at that time, he was perched on the camera tree.

@Spotty - Unfortunately, no one has been able to follow them and get a photo or video of them hunting/fishing. That would be a wonderful thing to see.

@sandy - The situation was a bit different last year. The eaglets were younger and still in the nest - not even branching. It happened May 2rd. The adults were near the nest when the visitor arrived, but I guess they were not feeling there was any threat. If you look at the photos last year, you will see the situation was a bit different (look at the entire sequence):

@me - I think they have only stolen from each other at this point. No one that I know of has seen them get food elsewhere on their own.

@Marie - It does happen that other fledglings will visit other nests looking for food. I'm not sure you could say it is common though. You should ask CCB that question or DGIF when they are in the blog next time. There is a photo of the visitor on this page. Scroll down when it opens:

@jeank - Please visit the links above (DGIF and CCB's blogs) - the entire story of NE's adventure is written there - with photos also.

@Raptorman - I have not heard if anyone determined what that bird was - I believe you area asking about the one later in the day - dark grey with almost black tail feathers?

@NBG fan - I have noticed that also. I think they are just getting prepared to make that leap. I have a parrot who projects when he is going to try to launch also - and moves his feet back and forth too.

@Terri - Good question. I will try to find out the answer to that question.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:20:58 PM
@Mary Ann in BC - That is a good question. I know the rain doesn't affect it - it has to be waterproof - but I'm not sure what would happen if it was submerged. Although, it is fitted on the back, so wouldn't of been submerged too much. Please ask that question again when Mr. Lukei is in the blog. I will forward your question to him too, in case he isn't on soon.

@rth - Source CCB: At 1:00pm today (6/14/10) NE was returned by Lisa Barlow to Norfolk Botanical Garden and released back into the wild. He was placed on a six-foot high T-bar perch to get him off the ground and after a few seconds of looking around and orienting himself he launched into the air and flew directly toward his nest which was about 500 yards away. He flew past the nest tree and landed in a gum tree close to the picnic area. About 3:00 NE flew to the 2008 camera tree and then at 3:30 flew to the nest tree and sat on the front branch (love branch) next to Camellia (NC). Back home and all is well.

@J - NE was checked over completely by a local vet and they found him in good health. I'm sure the perch was just to get him a bit of lift, as it is more difficult for the young eagles to take off from the ground at this time - they are still building those muscles.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:50:03 PM
@Pink Floyd - Yes, I'm sure it is. I'm sure CCB can elaborate.
by Congowings at 6/15/2010 3:50:43 PM
@jean - I think it is NE in the nest right now. Earlier he was on the back branch. I wasn't watching when he went into the nest - so I'm just assuming it is NE. I could be wrong.

@Shari - looks that way.
