Live Blogging Event: Holmes Inspection, Ep. 6

The house Kris and Dave bought had a finished basement, ideal for their active boys. When Dave found mould on some toys, he tore open the dry wall in the closet, only to discover a cold room that should never have been closed in. Their home inspector missed this very real threat to the family’s health and safety. Now they’ll need a Holmes Inspection – and help from Mike, Damon and the crew to Make it Right.

  • Mouldy toys! oh no! This should be an interesting - if horrifying episode.

  • Hi, my name is Brent from B.C. ive been a Roofer for 15 yrs. I started roofing when i was 15 Doing hot work and such then advanced on to bigger and better roofing doing such systems as (SBS torch on, TPO rubber, PVC rubber, EPDM Rubber, Tar & Gravel BUR, Shingles and Metal roofing. The reason im writing you today is I just started to watched your show and noticed a a few things wrong with what the Roofer was saying. Not sure what episode it was but they were doing a re-roof on a shigle job and they were talking bout the over topper. Well in my experience most of the time the home owner when given that option they usually take it cause its cheap and most home owners arnt willing to pay what it takes to do it right anyways thats not why I started this post. When they were ripping of the SBS Torch on BASE PLY not(mid ply)also they 3 tab shingles that the home owner wanted are only a 10-15yr shingle. Ice and water should not be on the whole house either the roofer needs to breath to (help)prevent the shingles from bakeing in the heat of the summer. Ice and water is required in the eve and valleys Paper for the rest. I also observed a Torch on SBS roof being done with the wrong equipment. Not a good idea to strip in walls and scupper drains with a field torch, they have stripping torchs for that reason (much shorter)being is you can no control when you have that long wand stripping it in

  • Sorry I hit the enter key there. I also observed no degranulation when they when applying end laps together 6" is required for the end lap. Not degranulating (also known as inbeding)the endlap results in water Capilery action through the lap. What degranulating/inbeding does is it pushes the granuals past the bitumen in the sheet so your sealed to the bitumen rather then the granuals.Sorry i just didnt like teh explanations that the Roofer was giving i Honestly think that you could find better people. Anyways feel free to write me back if you have questions.

  • AND Kris has lupus. Mould is super dangerous for her.
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:04:27 AM
  • How is someone to tell that a room used to be a cold room?
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:04:47 AM
  • So what does everyone think so far? How much work will be involved? How much damage is hidden?
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:08:33 AM
  • Tree root penetration at the front of the house? What can a root do? Maybe cause more moisture.
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:10:56 AM
  • That side walkway seems like an obvious problem.
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:11:52 AM

  • Okay, Holmes Inspection fans, I know you're watching. What do you think?
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:18:44 AM
  • How scared would you be if a bunch of men in white plastic suits had to clean out your basement?
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:19:05 AM
  • It's on again at midnight isn't it? I'll try to catch it then.
by Dawn at 11/6/2009 1:20:47 AM
  • Anyone looking to buy a house? Will you put extra consideration into the home inspection now that you've watched this show?
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:22:00 AM
  • They're saving the toys!
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:22:49 AM
  • Wow. They've ripped a lot out in the basement
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:24:27 AM
  • Yes, for sure... I'm terrified of ever hiring a contractor or home inspector now!
by Dawn at 11/6/2009 1:24:32 AM
  • I know! Luckily, like I said, I think you can find references from Mike himself
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:25:03 AM
  • I'm surprised there aren't bugs to go along with the mould
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:25:46 AM
  • Go to Mike's personal site and click on Inspections to use his inspection service

  • One of my friends used Mike's Home Inspection Service. They had nothing but good things to say about the "Holmes Approved" Inspector that did the inspection
by Joe at 11/6/2009 1:29:48 AM
  • Does Mike actually do the inspections himself, or does he have staff?
by Dawn at 11/6/2009 1:30:00 AM
  • Hi Joe, did your friend buy the house?
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:30:13 AM
  • Dawn, I think Mike's busy with the show
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:30:29 AM
  • Yeah they actually did. There was work to be done on the house.. as per the inspector's report. But it was a good deal regardless.
by Joe at 11/6/2009 1:31:26 AM
  • I'm pretty sure his Inspections are a bit more expensive.. but i guess you get what you pay for..
by Joe at 11/6/2009 1:31:54 AM
  • I'm glad to hear that. I'd be afraid that if Mike's team did an inspection, you wouldn't want to buy the house. Glad they found a good one.
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:32:04 AM
  • And yeah, guess you always get what you pay for
by hgtvcanada at 11/6/2009 1:32:19 AM
  • Maybe I'll look into getting them to inspect my place before I sell.. just so I'm prepared ;)
