How can you take your brand or business to the next level by becoming a leading-edge user of social media platforms? All participants in the digital media market, from consumers to bloggers to big media, have had their world rocked by the revolution in social media. What are the main characteristics behind social media platforms such as Bebo, Facebook, Google, Hi5, and MySpace, and what do they mean to your business.

Kris: Social means blogs, twitter, face. Its about giving up some control. How do you work with that?
Steve: The CBC puts it out there and will try lots of different things. You need to take your audience into account and what they expect of you.
There was an event that a company was going do but the images of people drinking would end up on the web so they dialed it back.
Mark: Give control back to the fans. Peter Jackson reach out and showed people online and gained value back to the fans. Steve: some dude at CBC has his name on every Lord of the Rings movie credits and a "Thanks to the fans"
Steve: If you give ownership to the fans they will pass it on to there friends. Ron: Fans you used their own social networks to see what other fans were getting paid. Ended up that the fans demanded a 1.99 US flat rate.
Jen: how can you create value for your friend so the fan base will grow. Jet Stream was her last project and discussed weather to use existing social networks or create their own. They chose to tap in and it worked extremely well. Ended in mid-Fed and they are still posting today.
Kris: it's not about selling 10,000 albums it's about 1000 new fans.
Q: Passion of the fans.
Steve: That's what's it's truly about. We go out to the community on their terms and create value and relevance. 100,000 podcast downloads of all Canadian music. There are pockets of fans everywhere. All around the world.
Ron: Social networks are a feature not a destination.
Q: Do you want control of the group once it's successful.
Steve: The guys who start the CBC 3 fan group on face book is just a fan. If he says it's awesome then it's awesome. They control the mySpace group but there are other people on mySpace creating groups.
Matt: we don't want to control but we try to direct it. We answer blog posts and try to correct the issues that arise. Be transparent as possible.
Q: How do you start a community.
Kris: BSG started a great fan base by offering cool tools that you can't get from a TV experience.
Jen: How to strengthen your community. Using the existing community to story tell ARG's alternate realities. Using Facebook, youTube to create a buzz. The Lost Ring is a big one now. It's all sponsored by McDonalds but there is no blatant branding in the game.
Sarah: You need to start a "Party" It take a lot of time and a lot of effort. You need to be real.
Is open social a good idea.
Kris: Sure, Facebook is not a Google friendly product.
Q: Getting the tools to the fans. What's the best way.
Sarah: You need to reward. Check out Plurk.com. They want to be the first ones to post or Digg. It has to be relevent to the user.
Kris: Pushing the nextMEDIA social site.
Ning: Create your own social network. A good place for small networks.
