marcel reichart back on stage
he's introducing Bertrand Piccard (BP) from solar impulse
over 100 years the Piccard family is involved in exploration
BP talks today about solar impulse, a solar plane that goes around the whole world
BP: i don't need a long speech to explain that we have a lot of challenges before us
BP: the problem is not new ideas
"Pioneering spirit is not about new ideas, it is about fighting old ideas."
BP: the problem is how to get rid of old habits and old ways of thinking
"impossible" has always been the mindset before a great exploration
when we're sure something is not possible, we have to change our perspective
we should lern for life from flying a ballon.
when you go in the wrong direction with a ballon, you have to change altitude
if you want to change altitude in a ballon, you have to drop ballast
our ballast in life are our habits, mindsets, convictions etc.
we think that our convictions are making us stronger but they are just making us heavier
i believe in doing the opposite of my conviction to create a broader space of choice in between
like not just joining on political party but opposite parties at once
sometimes we need help
like for ballons you need weatherman
do you want to go very fast in the wrong direction or slowly in the right direction?
when you have to calculate how much gas you need to cross the atlantic in a ballon, you really feel the dependency to fossil fuels in your guts
the greatest challenge of the 21st century will be to get rid of that dependency
we have the technologies, but we're not using them
it basically comes down to a lack of vision in politics and business
that's what we have in mind with solar impulse
when we started, we had no one supporting us
after a year, we had 70 people on our teams
the plane is completely made out of carbon fiber
the goal for this summer is to make the launch with our own power and after that fly through the night only on batteries
but this airplane flying day and night is much more
it stands for the hunt to get us independed from fossil fuels until it's to late
that's it from this session
