An Event Apart: San Francisco

  • Opening comments.. blah blah blah.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:33:41 PM
  • Jeffery Zeldman taking the stage.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:33:57 PM
  • Real: Site being driven by THEIR needs, not the USERS needs.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:36:56 PM
  • eg. bury the free player! Make the UI incredibly confusing.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:37:27 PM
  • "Conflicting corporate STUFF"
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:37:34 PM
  • Zelman's a bike nerd? His example of a product search on ConsumerSearch is Xtracycle. :)
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:38:50 PM
  • "Good education is hard to find"
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:41:18 PM
  • TECHNICAL education is easy. USABILITY and design that WORKS is not.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:42:34 PM
  • "Non-stop learning."
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:43:14 PM
  • "Have you ever faked it?" Talking about pretending you know more about a topic than you do. Glad I'm not the only one! :)
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:45:12 PM
  • "Is education relevant?" According to the ALA web survey, it's about 50/50 whether people think their education was relevant to their career in the webly arts.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:46:06 PM
  • Apparently the more money you make, the less likely it is you think your education was relevant. This could just be because older=richer, and the web wasn't around when older folk were in school.|
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:46:24 PM
  • Developer = less likely to have a relevant education.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:47:24 PM
  • Designer = much more likely. Obviously, since design isn't specific to the web.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:47:37 PM
  • Web designers get no respect! *adjusts collar*
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:49:38 PM

  • Ironic since online sales are one of the few areas of 'retail' where things aren't in a decline. (apparently)
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:50:14 PM
  • Part of the problem is "no standardized titles" for web design jobs. Unlike the "baloney" titles in management/exec jobs.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:51:30 PM
  • Job titles tend to be similar in similar organization types. Eg: educational organizations like using "web master" which is incredibly out of date.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:52:50 PM
  • People in this field experience the same prejudices (re: salaries) as other fields. Kind of surprising. Sounds like they're looking into more relating to sexism/racism in the latest ALA Survey.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:56:30 PM
  • Explaining design/etc to 'old people' (my words)|
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:58:40 PM
  • It doesn't always matter whether YOU like it, it's more important whether your USERS like it and whether it WORKS for their purposes. Obvious to us as designers (I would hope), but not always obvious to your clients.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 3:59:35 PM
  • Comminication Arts mag awards: Great graphic design vs. great user experience. Winners get asked to be judges, so the award recipients don't really evolve.|
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:05:46 PM
  • Webby nominee profile text: "I think they had an intern write this, and then a drunk person proof-read it."
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:09:20 PM
  • Are web awards relevant to Real, Good Design? Not according to Zeldman. They're focusing on the wrong things.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:10:01 PM
  • Big media: Isn't the idea more important than the money? Apparently not. It's all the media focuses on.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:13:40 PM
  • Zeldman paraphrasing someone: How come there isn't anything as iconic/memorable as a Milton Glazer (sp) poster in web-design?
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:14:16 PM
  • "LANDMARK web design": a design that can work with any content, but still seem like it was designed custom for that specific site/content.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:15:24 PM
  • All designers want every OTHER designer to think "I hate that guy!" Zelman calls it the "Guitar Solo" approach to web design.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:16:47 PM
  • Good showing off. Not necessarily good DESIGN.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:17:04 PM
  • "Good web design is about the character of the content, not the character of the designer."
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:17:35 PM
  • Get away from showing off, and move towards "empathetic web design." Gets away from the battle between 'agile' and 'user centered'.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:18:21 PM
  • 12 tips.. here they come! "12 tips, 10 minutes"
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:19:19 PM
  • 1. Start with the user. (and stay there)
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:20:01 PM
  • 2. Know yourself. There may be things you are good/bad at.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:21:01 PM
  • 3. Find the right clients (or job). Relates to #2. Look for projects/jobs where you can THRIVE. You don't want to be in a place where you have to fight for everything, if that's NOT what you enjoy doing. Me: People enjoy fighting for everything? Weirdos.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:22:19 PM
  • 4. Sell IDEAS, not pixels! They should be choosing the CONCEPT, not (say) the colors or other nitty gritty specifics of the design. eg. Here's the corporate look, here's the touchy/feely consumer look.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:22:37 PM
  • 5. "I don't know" is okay. If you can't say that to a client/boss, you're in a bad situation.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:27:12 PM
  • he's on 7... did I miss 6? :P
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:27:58 PM
  • 7. Bring out the BIG GUNS. Use your knowledge to persuade.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:28:33 PM
  • 8. Create a paper trail. Remind them of what they signed up for.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:28:47 PM
  • 9. Never underprice your work.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:29:05 PM
  • 10. Say NO to spec. Don't work on spec. no-spec.com?
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:29:43 PM
  • 11. Say no to rush jobs. You can rush, but they probably won't. The reason they're late is because THEY'RE slow/PITA.|
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:29:48 PM
  • 12. END with the user.
by Wesley Hodgson at 8/18/2008 4:30:35 PM
  • Zeldman's done. Break time.
