We're setting up base in the former translators' lounge. Old school fun. Still preparing some stuff, but we'll get started soon. Official session start is 4:15pm.
by thewavingcat at 10/21/2008 1:39:44 PM
We'll be liveblogging in four slots over the next two hours or so: Jen Pahlka's and Brady Forrest's Opening Welcome, O'Reilly Radar with Tim O'Reilly, A Conversation with Yossi Vardi (with both Tim O'Reilly and Yossi Vardi), and Startup Ignite. Ignite will be the largest panel by far with Brady Forrest, Lukasz Gadowski, Mike Butcher and Christophe Maire.

by igor at 10/21/2008 2:05:55 PM
The room's filling up quickly, but there's still quite a few seats left.

by jk at 10/21/2008 2:19:33 PM
The room's packed by now. Light show. Somewhat esoteric.
by thewavingcat at 10/21/2008 2:20:25 PM
wow, they right from the start make reference to the shitty experience of last year
by jk at 10/21/2008 2:20:44 PM
"Thanks for coming back after last year", Jen Pahlka just said. Irony still works quite well. And yes, it's a lot better organized this time. Props!

do you really think that we are done with these?
by jk at 10/21/2008 2:25:06 PM
A lot of updates will be posted simultaneously; this is because the wireless seems to have broken down.

"i have predicted for a long time that we will enter a time of consolidation"
by jk at 10/21/2008 2:26:05 PM
Winners: Cloud computing; SAAS appls like Google Apps, Open Source software. Also, entrepreneurs who believe in their stuff and stick to it.
by thewavingcat at 10/21/2008 2:27:26 PM
Losers: Me-too startups (i.e. copycats), and the VCs that supported them.
by thewavingcat at 10/21/2008 2:27:50 PM
by jk at 10/21/2008 2:28:02 PM
I (not Tim) say: not too bad, losing those copycats.
by thewavingcat at 10/21/2008 2:28:17 PM
did tim just say bubble? ;-)
by jk at 10/21/2008 2:28:44 PM
Tim switches to the impact of tech on ecological issues. that's something he also stressed in our interview earlier today. (We'll post it later.)
by thewavingcat at 10/21/2008 2:29:23 PM
"not an investment bubble - a reality bubble!"
by Florian Krakau at 10/21/2008 2:29:25 PM

Dramatic slides. If we don'T act and there's climat change: "Bilions die, large wars, horible famine and drought, economic collapse..."
by thewavingcat at 10/21/2008 2:34:29 PM
He means: Really solve problems, don't solve wanna-be problems that fit your marketing.
